Young talent and career changers

On board our inland barges, every crew member fulfils an important role. From sailor to captain, every team member contributes to safe, efficient voyages and high-quality service. UniBarge offers an environment where your development and ambitions are central, with support from experienced colleagues and plenty of opportunities to develop yourself further. So if you want to change careers, explore new horizons or make the most versatile use of your talents, UniBarge is happy to offer you the chance to do just that. From education to working on board, or from office to barge – with the right ambition, anything is possible!

Jobs and career opportunities on board

Working on board offers many opportunities to grow. For example, you can start as a sailor and, with the right guidance and commitment, you can progress to mate and eventually captain.

Sailor

As a sailor, you are the first point of contact for everything on deck. You will help load and unload goods, ensure a clean and safe deck, and perform maintenance work. This is often the starting point for careers on board, where you get to know all the ins and outs of the inland barge. Want to grow further? That is also possible with us.

After gaining experience as a sailor, you can advance to the position of helmsman. In this role, you will support the captain, collaborate on navigation and coordinate the daily operations on board. You will play a key role in communication and collaboration with the rest of the team.

Becoming a captain requires experience and dedication. Do you have ambitions to become a captain? We will help you take the right steps.

The captain has ultimate responsibility on board. In this role, you will ensure the safety of the crew and cargo, navigate the inland barge, and ensure that all regulations and procedures are strictly followed.

As a captain, you can also become a captain instructor, passing on your knowledge of the trade to a new generation.
